Broome transport companies: what to check before you switch freight providers

If you move freight in or out of Broome, your carrier decides whether site gets its parts on Thursday or the following week. When freight keeps getting bumped to the next truck, or a quote takes days to come back, it’s worth looking at other Broome transport companies.

Switching has its own risk. Nobody wants to be the one explaining to site why the first load with a new carrier didn’t turn up.

This guide covers the four things to check before you move your freight: coverage, capacity, reliability and how fast you can get a quote. For each one, we’ve set out how Jolly & Sons answers it from our Broome depot at 5 McDaniel Road, Minyirr.

1. Coverage: does the carrier actually run your freight lane?

Start with the route, not the brochure. A carrier that runs Broome “as required” is a very different service from one with fixed departure days and a depot at both ends.

Questions to ask any carrier:

  • Is there a staffed depot in Broome, or is your freight handed to a subcontractor at some point?
  • Which routes run on a fixed weekly schedule?
  • Can they collect from your premises in Broome, or do you have to drop at the depot?
  • Do they carry the freight types you send, such as chilled goods, dangerous goods or oversized loads?

How Jolly & Sons covers Broome. We run our own depot at 5 McDaniel Road, Minyirr, alongside depots in Perth (Welshpool), Karratha and Darwin. Scheduled services run between Perth, Broome, Karratha, Port Hedland, Darwin and Carnarvon, and we arrange local collections within each depot’s area.

Across our network we carry general and express freight, refrigerated freight, sensitive freight including licensed dangerous goods, over-dimensional and project freight, and wharf cartage and last mile deliveries, plus warehousing and storage.

See our general and express freight services for the full list.

2. Capacity: will your freight make the truck?

Capacity decides whether your freight goes on the scheduled departure or waits for the next one. It matters most for mixed loads, large items and busy weeks before a shutdown or the wet season.

Questions to ask any carrier:

  • How many vehicles do they run, and what types?
  • Can one consignment mix pallets, loose items, chilled goods and oversized pieces?
  • When a truck is full, how do they decide what gets held back, and how do they tell you?
  • Can they store your freight if site isn’t ready to receive it?

How Jolly & Sons handles capacity. We operate nearly 200 working assets, including road trains and purpose built refrigerated trailers. Loads that won’t fit a standard trailer go through our over-dimensional and project freight service.

When site isn’t ready to receive freight, we offer warehousing and storage.

3. Reliability: can you plan around them?

The simplest reliability test is a published schedule. If a carrier won’t commit to departure and arrival days in writing, you can’t plan site supply around them.

Questions to ask any carrier:

  • What are the fixed departure and arrival days, both ways?
  • What is the booking cut-off, and what happens if you miss it?
  • How do you see where your freight is without phoning around?
  • What independent accreditations do they hold?

Deliveries run until close of business on the delivery day, and we prepare a separate schedule for every public holiday. The full timetable and booking cut-offs are on our frequently asked questions page.

Visibility. Every consignment is tracked by GPS and barcode scanning. Customers can check consignment status through our online customer portal (Transvirtual), rather than chasing updates by phone.

Accreditations. We hold ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 45001 (workplace health and safety). We’re also accredited under NHVAS, the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme, and our team is trained in Chain of Responsibility, the law that makes everyone in the supply chain share responsibility for heavy vehicle safety.

Wet season. Broome’s wet season runs roughly December to March, and road freight north can be disrupted. Ask any carrier how they plan for it and how they’ll tell you about delays. We’ll cover order timing in more detail in our wet season freight guide.

4. Quote speed: how fast can you get a price?

A slow quote holds up purchase orders and pushes freight onto a later truck. Ask a carrier how long quotes take and exactly what they need from you, because most delays come from missing details.

How to get a Jolly & Sons quote to or from Broome. Email transport@jolly.com.au or use the Get a Quote form on our website. Include:

  • The account to be charged
  • Sender and receiver names, addresses and contact details
  • A description of each item, with weights and dimensions
  • Dangerous goods details, if any
  • Whether you need pickup, delivery or both
  • Details of every item if there’s more than one

Once you accept the quote by return email, we email the consignment note (the freight paperwork) and labels, then arrange collection. Bookings go to bookings@jolly.com.au.

Two things slow quotes down more than anything else: missing dimensions and undeclared dangerous goods. Sending both upfront gets you a price sooner. We’ll go deeper on this in our Broome freight quote guide.

Making the switch without missed deliveries

The real worry with switching is the changeover, not the new carrier. Before you commit, ask how the move will work in practice:

  • What does account setup involve, and how long does it take?
  • When do you get access to tracking and the customer portal?
  • Can you start with one lane or one regular consignment before moving everything?
  • Who is your contact at the Broome depot if something goes wrong?

Also check your freight cover. Jolly & Sons doesn’t insure freight directly, but we offer optional FreightSafe cover for a small fee.
